This picture is from my time studying abroad in Tanzania. We were driving around the Serengeti National Park right before sundown when this giraffe came along. My friend wanted me to try and capture her and the giraffe because then people back home might actually realize how close we were to these amazing creatures. Even though I think this photo does show the proximity of the animal to ourselves, it does so much more. You can see the parallel nature of the neck of my friend and the neck of the giraffe, which links directly to what we studied in the national parks. We constantly observed animals in their natural habitat and I saw that they really weren’t all that different from ourselves. They like to roam, they like to nap during a hot afternoon, they are constantly searching for great food. Also in this photo, you can see the neverending landscape of the acacia trees in the background. This landscape was so different and yet it felt like home. My professor said to us on one of my first days in Tanzania that “there is something about Africa that just gets under you skin and you can’t get rid of it. Once you have experienced it, you will always be longing for more.” This picture embodies that statement for me.
