This man took me into his home and treated me like a daughter. This picture helps capture his simple warmth, always there but never forceful.
After studying abroad in Thailand, I had about a month before I needed to go home. I was faced with two options, travel around SE Asia or stay with a slum community I'd just worked on a documentary with. The choice was easy and I spent the next month with a community of the most amazing and generous people. This man took care of his nine grandchildren, supporting them through spending 8 hours a day digging through trash for a measly $3. He never went to school a day in his life, but his wisdom was boundless. His generosity still continues to amaze me when I think of it. He's one of the most inspiring people I've met. I think he and the rest of the family understand that I love them and consider them my second family now. However, I don't think they'll ever be able to understand how much they've touched me and taught me. |
