"Today all the sirens become songs"
So I actually wrote the initial version of Not Today back in high school...my band back then, the Locals, even recorded an early version of it. At that time (mid 90's) we (as a culture) were wrapped in a musical period of silly angst (not that I didn't love KC, Pearl Jam, etc)...So the song is kind of a response to that, but mostly bout my strong feelings regarding negativity in the news media...When I was 12, I sent a letter to Dave Macelhatton (sp?) who was the anchor at the local CBS station--I told him to please stop showing so much violence and trauma in the news...that there were other more positive things to focus on. He never responded. Ratings stayed high, I guess. I was clearly a weird kid.
Anyway, the song kind of came back to life more recently and began to strike me as more and more relevant as the war in Iraq progressed and filled up our lives and television sets. I added some new lyrics, and headed back to the studio. Sometimes we just need a break, a bubble we can crawl into where everything just feels good and the world is wonderful. Do we always want to feel the weight of humanity's imperfections? Not today.
