I was living in New York, in a converted closet with a window looking out at a tenement shaft brick wall. I had moved there to work on my music, and make a life (and hopefully a living) performing it. As the winter began, I found that sitting in that room writing I saw less and less daylight. It seemed like a fitting reality, given my distance from friends and community, and lack of response from the outside world to the music I was putting out. And I guess the natural inclination in that situation was to feel sorry for myself.. but I felt like the only way to get through it was to go on a little faith -- that doing what's true to yourself, even if the world around seems to dim at first, has to be the best way back to the light.
that's kind of a cheesy metaphor as i've just described it, but hopefully it doesn't come off that way in the song :)
It's really just a reminder for myself that the way of things reveals itself SO gradually around me, that I have to be okay working to build the fire, and trust the world to take its turn in time.
