Theresa's Backdrop What is this?
Why?
When I was in elementary school, a friend and I became captivated by a story we read, the Egypt Game. I don't remember the specifics of the narrative, but it inspired us to begin a game of our own, dressing up in sheets and applying wild eyeliner with our unsteady 3rd-grader's hands. We would quietly wait til midnight and solumnly light candles in the darkened spare bedroom. Her black cat was always invited to participate, but consistently declined. These were the first ways we began to seek some sort of mysticism in our young lives.
How was it?
Interesting... I had expected the humorous anecdotes of a modern man who blunders through an attempt to survive in a technology-free environment, but was instead met with a very serious discussion of the effect of Technology on soiety. I wondered if I could live for a year in an agrarian society like Brende did, and at first said yes, no problem. That was modified to "yes, but not without my cell phone," then "yes, but not without my cell phone, ipod and computer." Again, interesting. It's thought-provoking, but I have already decided that the next book I read will be fiction!
